There are preliminary reports that Petland may be closing. Apparently there have been unusual discounts on all inventory and puppies have been moved out of cages. A salesperson said they would be closing on Sunday.
Of course, it could be a ploy. At least some version of the proposed retail ban on puppies and kittens should be going forward regardless!
If this IS true, this is great news, and a testament to what so many people have helped with over the years with the weekly protests and with the proposed ordinances.

I just posted a comment to the Statesman article Timothy referenced.
My letter to the editor:
The Petland protest was not about people losing jobs. It was not about helping homeless people or hungry children. It was about closing a store that caused needless suffering in this world. The Petland protestors raised their voices and sought to end the needless suffering of dogs on puppy mills. They thought, and I agree, it is not fair to sell unfixed puppies while we have homeless dogs being killed at our local shelter. This has nothing to do with animal activists taking on the whole world. They just saw a corner of the world that manufactured needless suffering and they did something about it. I find it interesting that the people who have a problem with this are the same people who are doing nothing about anything except complaining that they feel jobs have been taken and/or these protestors should be concerned more with human issues. If these same people feel those things are their calling, then by all means they should get off their butt and do something about it instead of just complaining. And my advice to the Kazmierskis who went to Petland to pet puppies is to take their sons to Town Lake Animal Shelter and pet the dogs there, as they need to feel someone besides the Petland protestors care about their fate.
STATESMAN printed about an article about the closing of PETLAND

Of course, many of the comments are despicably more about people's jobs and other human "injustices" rather than the fact that the closing of PETLAND will end the suffering of so many dogs.
Please leave your comments in support of the closure of PETLAND and a letter to the editor would be especially encouraged. I will try to work on mine later today.
