Animal Rights vs. U.S. Dairy Industry

There's an article today on ABC.com about a Mercy For Animals undercover investigator's footage from a large New York dairy operation.  The article is sympathetic to the cows and includes excruciating footage of tail dockings and dehornings. The dairy trade group says that tail docking is done for cleanliness reasons, while the California director from the Humane Society says it is barbaric and unnecessary.  The article contains the usual quotes from the dairy farmers saying they wouldn't do it if it interfered with the well-being of the animal.

Tail docking has been outlawed in California, and a prohibition bill was introduced to the NY legislature last week.

I am always thrilled to see issues like this in the mainstream news.  They will show clips tonight on World News Tonight at 5:30 and Nightline at 10:30.

Sent to my family & friends, and submitted to a consumer blog that may be interested in covering it as well.

I posted to my FACEBOOK page, too...I didn't try to watch the footage....I'm depressed enough!!! :((((

So, glad to see this. I just put a page on my facebook. Like  I said, Humane = Healthier animals & people!

I recorded the newscast and watched part of it this morning.  Wow.  It's not just a couple of clips, it's an expose on the dairy industry.  It juxtaposes the California cows in heaven ads with cows up to their knees in manure in crowded dark barns that they are never allowed to leave.  Cows that are kept continuously pregnant so they lactate continuously.  Did anyone else see it?

Thanks for posting this.  I'm posting it to my Facebook page right now.  Please post comments to the article.  It is important for ABC (and their viewers) to see many of us commenting to support ABC for covering this issue.

Thanks Constance! I've also posted on my Facebook page. People think this kind of treatment is new or isolated, but people need to know this kind of animal treatment is typical of the industry.

Wow - I could only get through a few seconds of that footage.

Thanks for sharing this - I am going to put a link on my FB page.  If people are consuming dairy products they need to watch this.  It is the least they can do.

It is exciting that this is on mainstream news.
