Queenie, the Lone Elephant in Leggett, Texas

Friends:

This is a follow-up to Queenie's condition, the elephant that is left chained to a tree in Leggett by a Mr. Davenport, who had two previous elephants confiscated due to extreme weight loss.

I just had the most disturbing call that I made to a Chester Gibson who is the overseer of the animal welfare program of USDA.  He was completely unknowledgeable of Queenie's condition and didn't even seem to care.  I told him the USDA was responsible for this elephant's condition but he claimed it fell under the Fish and Wildlife Services and State of Texas to get Queenie help.  I'm livid right now because nobody seems to be helping this poor animal.

Does anybody know right off hand where Leggett is?  Mr. Clueless Gibson seemed to suggest it was not far from San Antonio.  This is a matter that is extremely important, as this poor elephant is chained to a tree by herself in extreme weather conditions and if Mr. Davenport didn't take care of the other two elephants, why was Queenie left behind.  Mr. Gibson claimed it was because Queenie was not in as bad a condition as the other two elephants.  But, if somebody has elephants that are in bad conditions, doesn't it stand to reason that the elephant you left behind will fall under the same conditions????

This is unacceptable, of course, and I want to do something for this poor animal.

Let me know what your thoughts are and if you are willing to help in this matter.

Thanks!

Timothy

I just joined so sorry for no picture yet... but I wanted to respond regarding Queenie.  The elephant left with Will Davenport by the USDA.  Apparently they struck some deal, because they were trying to get Tina & Jewel who were in the most desperate need.  Will Davenport is 24 years old.  He's a circus guy and if anyone wants history on the three elephants the IDA (In defense of animals) has information.  We (my facebook group SAVE TINA JEWEL & QUEENIE) has been writing letters for a very almost a year.  We are now writing on behalf of Queenie.  Gipson certainly knows all about it.  He's just playing dumb.  The people we've been focusing on is Kevin Shea (APHIS Administrator) as he was involved in getting Tina & Jewel. & Tom Vilsack (Director of the USDA). If you are interested, here is contact information: KEVIN SHEA, (APHIS), FAX:   202-720-3054; Phone: 202-720-3861; TOM VILSACK (Director of USDA), FAX: 202-720-2166; Phone: 202-720-3631

We also need to make sure that the poor girl doesn't end up in a zoo.  However saying "sanctuary" to Davenport is like voodoo.  He doesn't understand it.  He's made some statements that are obvious he doesn't have a clue about the purpose.  I'm sure everyone knows, but www.elephants.com does amazing work, as does PAWS (performing animal welfare society).  These sanctuaries love the elephants so much.  Anyway, please feel free to communicate with me on Facebook.  Check out SAVE TINA JEWEL & QUEENIE.  If anyone has any new ideas... please help.  We are desperate to get Queenie out.  I think getting local government support in TX is VERY IMPORTANT.

Thanks for listening!

I used to live in both Livingston and Lufkin, in and near Polk County. I'll see if I can get in touch with anyone who may have some clout to get the ball rolling on getting this poor elephant some relief!

Leggett Tx is about 100 miles north of Houston (between Houston and Nacogdoches). You can try the sherriff's office in that county or try the fish & wildlife services dept. Better yet, try APHIS. They have an office in Austin at 916-5241.

http://ida.convio.net/site/MessageViewer?em_id=7581.0&printer_friendly=1 Timothy, I found this link about Queenie the Elephant. Seems a lot of people are trying to help her. I guess we can call and email these different people. The thought of her being tied to a tree is just sickening!

I have been on the phone all morning trying to find out about Queenie.  I found this article online: http://www.easttexasnews.com/Enterprise/News/Ind/August2009/story25.html.  According to the people I spoke to, Mr. Davenport was allowed to keep Queenie, who is 52 years old, by the way, because she was not in serious condition.  I just don't understand why they confiscated the other two who were clearly malnourished but left behind Queenie who, inevitably, meet the same dilemma.  One thing I wanted to research was the animal care laws in Polk County.  I'm unable to find that currently so if anyone has time to research that and find the info, I would appreciate it!  I will do research as well, but I have to work now ;(((
