CORE GROUP MTG THIS SATURDAY AND MORE

Posted on Fri Dec 19 12:44:47 -0600 2008

Hope everyone is having a great Friday. Action for Animals has one last core group meeting this Saturday. See details below. Also, you still have plenty of time to make a donation to AFA in time for the holidays. To learn more click on the link below. Finally, USA Today had a great op-ed on vivisection on Monday. Read about this great piece below.

1) Our last core group meeting of the year is this Saturday, Dec. 19, at Spiderhouse, from 11am-12:30pm. We'll be discussing our spring campaigns and how to be more effective in reaching the public about animal rights. Lots and lots of outdoor festivals are held in the Austin area in the spring. Help us decide which ones to table at or leaflet at. Be prepared to speak up and take on some responsibilities.

2) Our next anti-fur demos are next year (Jan 10 and 24) at Julian Gold but you can still take action to stop this store from selling fur. Call them today at 512-473-2493 and ask to speak to Michelle Granata, the store manager. Politely ask her to stop selling fur. Tell her that you would shop at her store if they stopped selling fur. Point out that Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, and Kenneth Cole have stopped selling fur. Add that none of her customers will complain if her store stoped selling fur. Again, please be polite and brief.

3) Hey, were are those checks??? Action for Animals still needs your donations this holiday season. For this holiday season consider making a holiday donation of $5, $10 or more to AFA in a loved one's name. We are happy to send them a thank you card letting them know about your donation.

4) USA Today, like many newspapers, published a "oppose/support" opinion in Monday's paper related to animal experiments. One writer supports animal experiments and of course opposes the use of property destruction to target researchers who use animals. The other writer opposes the use of animals for research and also opposes property destruction. This piece is important because the writer who opposes animal experiments, John Pippin, advises the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) and was also a former vivisector.

Here's part of what he writes in his opposing view:

"Every one of 197 human trials using 85 HIV/AIDS vaccines tested in animals has failed. More than 150 human stroke trials using treatments successful in animals have failed, as have at least two dozen animal diabetes cures. Vioxx was tested successfully in eight studies using six animal species, yet this anti-inflammatory medication may have caused the deaths of more Americans than the Vietnam War."

The link to both opinions is below. Please read them. If you oppose animal experiments then Mr. Pippin's piece gives you valuable facts to use to argue against animal experiments.

Support animal experiments: http://blogs.usatoday.com/oped/2008/12/violence-wont-s.html

Thanks.

CIRCUS IN TOWN THIS WEEKEND, VEG CHILI COOK-OFF, VICTORIES FOR ANIMALS

Posted on Thu Nov 06 09:01:51 -0600 2008

Action for Animals is just as happy that the elections are over as any of you are. As you know, more Democrats have been elected to the U.S. house and senate. We now have reason to hope that we can do more to protect animals since Democrats are generally more animal-friendly. But our work is not over. Because we have more possible votes then we must work just as hard to make sure those new (and old) animal-friendly legislators vote to protect animals when we need them. We must call/email/and lobby them continuously, constantly, and consistently. We'll let you know when to start pressuring your legislator about important bills in the next few days.

Now, here's what you can do this weekend to protect animals in Austin. Through one of our members we learned that the Shriners Circus will be in town this weekend. We'll be leafleting their shows and holding a demo, as well. We'll be at the Travis County Exposition Center located at 7311 Decker Lane (go to http://www.co.travis.tx.us/exposition_center/map.asp for directions) for all of our events. We will be at the second entrance to the Center. Please park across the street from our demo. We have signs and banners. Please bring your friends, roommates and any others along. Please call us at 512-236-9518 if you have any questions.

Here's our schedule for this event: Friday, Nov. 7th - leafleting from 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8th - demo from 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9th - leafleting from 5:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. Next, we'll be tabling at the Lone Star Vegetarian Chili Cook-off this Sunday, November 9th from 12:00 noon til 4:00 p.m. at the Austin Farmer's Market located at 6701 Burnet Road. We need a couple of folks to table with us for 2-hour shifts. Admission is free for volunteers. Call us at 512-236-9518 to help. No experience necessary. We'll be passing out leaflets and adding folks to our email list. Go to www.lsvn.org for details.

Finally, California voters approved Proposition 2, which will ban battery cages, veal crates, and sow crating. Farmed animals in California will be given these basic necessities by 2015. On the other side of the country, Question 3 passed, which will ban greyhound racing in the state of Massachusetts by 2010. Yes, these are years away but that is probably the reason they passed: no immediate consequences and it gives these industries time to make changes to their businesses.

CORE GROUP MEETING TOMORROW

Posted on Fri Oct 31 12:26:33 -0500 2008

Happy Halloween!!!!

Don't forget our core group meeting this Saturday (tomorrow) from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at Spiderhouse (2908 Fruth, behind I Luv Video on Guadalupe). Help us work on our fall campaigns. As a reminder, don't forget that our core group meetings are always the first and third Saturday of each month.

Also, the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service is conducting a status review to determine whether three ice-dependent seals that inhabit Alaskan waters warrant protection under the Endangered Species Act. This is the first important step toward protection for ringed, bearded, and spotted seals — all of which are threatened with extinction by the rapid loss of their Arctic sea-ice habitat due to global warming.

Next, Katie Couric of CBS News did a story promoting a childrens' rodeo on here Oct. 24, show. Go to this link to write a letter: http://ga0.org/campaign/Couric_rodeo

Thanks, everyone.
