Again, here's another nightmare story about how puppymills are bad for puppies and dogs. If you want a puppy or dog then try the Town Lake Animal Center, Humane Society of Austin, SARA, or any of the numerous rescue dog groups in Austin.
This story ran in the Austin American-Statesman yesterday. Write letters-to-the-editor today about why you will not buy from dog breeders ever. Some points to make:
- buying a puppy from a breeder means a puppy or dog is euthanized at Town Lake Animal Center
- there is no guarantee that a dog breeder is reputable since puppy mills are not regulated in the state of Texas
- i'd rather be part of the solution to our pet overpopulation problem in Austin by adopting from a dog rescue group or a shelter rather than buying from a puppy mill
- as this article points out, you never know what you are buying from a puppy mill
- over 10,000 dogs and cats are euthanized at TLAC. that costs austin taxpayers millions of dollars each year
- if your puppy or dog is adopted then say that in your letter

Aside from being unethical by supporting puppy mills, I can't help but add that buying a puppy from a pet store is just lazy consumerism. There are plenty more puppies and dogs to choose from at TLAC or the Austin Humane Society! Consumers need to do their research before bringing another being into their household.
