Hi Everyone - On February 15, 2010, I ran my second Austin Marathon. My time was 4 hours, 16 minutes. That's ten minutes faster than last year, which was my first 26 mile marathon. I think this run on Feb. 15th was harder than last year. I bonked at about mile 20 since fewer neighborhood folks showed up on the curb to hand out snakes...er, snacks. I kept running, slowly, but at about mile 22 I developed a sharp pain on my right foot arch. Kinda felt like I had stepped on a nail and it was digging into my foot. I stumbled along for a couple of miles alternating between walking and running. Finally, at mile 24, the pain lessened a bit. I was determined to beat last year's time, so I ran the last 2 miles. I'm was glad to be finished.
Why was I willing to run for 26 miles, with severe foot pain and to extreme exhaustion? Because I want to show that vegans can participate in endurance sports. This year is my 20th as a vegan, I'm 47 years old and I feel great.
My next event: the Austin Triathlon in September. It's approximately a one mile swim, 60 mile bike ride, and a 13 mile run. Wish me luck.

thx, vegangrrl. running 26 miles is grueling (and painful) but i do it to show that vegans can participate in endurance sports just like meat eaters. :)
This is an amazing feat! (no pun intended) Ernest is one of the healthiest people I know and it makes sense that he can run such long distances. Fitness and health are very important, especially in this day in age when we've got too many chronic health conditions than can be prevented by a good diet and exercise.
