John Kelso is at it again. In his column today in the Austin American-Statesman, he attacks Jeanne Daniels, owner of Tarrytown Shopping Center in West Austin, for making her tenants stop selling meat and any other product made from animals. This is probably the 3rd or 4th time he has attacked her in his column in the last 2 or 3 years. Ms. Daniels is probably the only shopping center owner in the U.S. who requires that only cruelty-free products be sold on her property. That is bold and brave. Please write letters now to defend Jeanne. She stands up for animals, now let's stand up for her.
Points to make:
- It's Ms. Daniels' property. She can do what ever she wants to do with it. If people want a burger they can walk across the street or down the block to get one.
- Jeanne is a hero for not supporting industries like the meat industry that horribly abuse animals. If more business owners were like her then we'd have less animal abuse in our community.
- I care about animals also and I wouldn't let my property be used to sell products made from horribly abused animals.
- According to the United Nations report on global warming, people's meat eating habit is the number one cause of global warming. John Kelso should be praising Ms. Daniels for doing more than her fair share to help stop global warming. And he should be joining her and millions of others across the U.S. like me who have pledged to go meat-free to save the planet from global disaster.
- Our huge meat-eating habit creates a giant demand for fossil fuels leading to foreign oil dependency, and risky off-shore drilling that can sometimes result in record-breaking and disastrous oil spills like the current one off Texas' coast.
- John Kelso can find other people to pick on besides someone who obviously cares deeply about animals.
Read Mr. Kelso's article here then write a letter-to-the-editor of the Statesman by going here.
The first line of your letter-to-the-editor should reference John's Kelso's article. Example: Re: John Kelso's column Animal-rights spat sends Tarrytown Pharmacy packing, June 14. Yes, I know this seems awkward but this is standard practice. For tips on writing an effective letter-to-the-editor, please read our blog here.
I want this to be John Kelso's last column attacking Ms. Daniels. By stopping these ridiculous attacks now on people who stand up for animals, we help ensure that any animal defender in the future is not attacked in a similar fashion or otherwise. I'll blog about this on our facebook page: Action for Animals Austin. Please share that blog with all your friends and ask them to write today. Thx.

Yeah, it's something I think we tend to forget about. Nu Age Cafe was located there, but they closed a couple years ago (I think the owner had health problems). As far as I know the rest of the businesses are more or less vegan by default (a mailbox place, liquor store, insurance agent, etc.).
Chris and I have been thinking that maybe AFAA should try to get together with Jeanne Daniels to find a way to get some businesses in the shopping center that we would want to support.
Woa we have an all vegan shopping center here in AUstin??!! I had no idea anyone know the list of stores/restaurants in this shopping center?
Not again!!!! He just needs to back off and let this woman run her business the way she sees fit. I mean, as a vegan, I have encounter a Wendy's or McDonald's on every corner of every street here in Austin. Shouldn't be allowed to have one corner of the street that is animal friendly??? I'll compose a letter and send it today.
Thx, Errol. :)
I just posted a comment to the article and also submitted a letter to the editor.
