In tonight's Animal Advisory Commission meeting, members of the city council-appointed group voted to recommend to the mayor and city council that they pass an ordinance to ban the sale of companion animals in the city limits. This would at least apply to kittens, cats, puppies and dogs. This news comes after yesterday's announcement that Petland would close its store in South Austin.
The Austin city council must now craft language for an ordinance for this ban. No votes are expected for weeks or months.
What to expect in the future? A huge fight to ban the sale of puppies from puppy mills in the state of Texas during the next legislative session starting in January 2011. This probably-ban in Austin will certainly help our side but it will have puppy mill operators and their lobbyist putting up one of the biggest fights of the 2011 legislative season.
