As part of our current campaign against Ringling Bros Circus, we are asking you to call Austin's mayor and city council members today to ask them to help stop animal abuse in circuses. This important step will only take 30-60 seconds to complete. Below is a sample dialogue you can use when making your calls followed by each city council member's name, phone number and email address. Emails are acceptable. You will be speaking to a council aide who will take your message. Please be very brief (30-60 seconds) and very polite. If they ask for your name and phone number, please provide that information.

Below is what you can say when calling:

"Hello. I'm calling to ask Mayor Leffingwell (or the name of the council member you are calling) to support an ordinance to protect animals in circuses.  Ringling Bros Circus is coming to Austin in a couple of weeks. I will not be attending because they use whips, chains, electric prods, bats, and other devices to train their animals. Federal laws are not enough to stop this type of animal abuse. Please ask the mayor to support an ordinance to ban any instruments used to inflict pain on circus animals. Thank you for your time."

You may use your own wording in your phone calls but it is most important to say, "Federal laws are not enough to stop this type of animal abuse. Please ask the mayor to support an ordinance to ban any instruments used to inflict pain on circus animals. Thank you for your time." If you are a mom or dad and have kids, then please say that you will not be taking your kids to see the circus.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks.

I called all City Council and Mayors offices. I felt that some assistants had trouble understanding what was specifically being asked. 'We cant prevent the circus from coming to town' etc. But when explained that the circus is here at least annually and continues to use instruments of pain to 'discipline' the elephants I think the message got through. Most seemed very receptive, and one was clearly supportive. We all need to call in and continue to protest Ringling.

Thank you for posting this. I will put it on my "todo" list for tomorrow when I get off work.
