Every year, Sea Shephard's ships are out in international waters trying to force Japan to stop whaling. This time they succeeded. After a continous campaign of harrassment of whaling boats by SS, Japan's fisheries agency announced last week that whaling boats will suspend their "research whaling" until conditions are safer. Under, international law, Japan is allowed to slaughter hundreds of whales for "scientific research" every year. Much of this whale meat ends up being sold in Japanese restaurants. Japan has published no papers on any research they have gathered from whaling.

Sea Shephard has been harrassing Japanese whaling boats for weeks in Antarctica as whalers attempt to kill 945 whales. Last year, Japan was able to hunt 1/2 of their quota for the year due to Sea Shephards anti-whaling campaing.
