No Petland In Austin Campaign

The Univ. of Texas' student paper, the Daily Texan, recently covered NoPetlandAustin's campaign against Petland, in South Austin. Below is their article. And below that is the group's website and schedule for demos.

If you don't know, NoPetlandAustin has been demonstrating againt the Petland in South Austin for about a year now. Their goal is to stop the store from selling puppies from puppymills. They have signs and banner; bring your own water, sunscreen, and sunglasses.

Location: Southpark Meadows Petland store

One has to wonder why the USDA should play a role in inspecting puppy mills.  Doesn't USDA stand for United States Department of Agriculture?  We're talking about pets, right?  And isn't the USDA the same organization that inspects animals raised for food on factory farms, where animals are overcrowded in windowless warehouses, loaded up with antibiotics and other drugs, and slaughtered in the most inhumane ways?  Why should we rely on their word for the humane inspection of puppy mills?  This is ludicrous!  Petland profits from puppy mills!  Bottom line.  Making Petland pay for their ignorance of the spay and neuter law is the least Austin can do, and shutting Petland down permanently is the most, and the right thing, Austin can do.
