A couple of weeks ago I noticed that the Whole Foods in downtown Austin was selling fresh vegan donuts in the bakery case. They looked good so I thought I would try one, sceptical that no one could possibly make a great vegan donut. I've been a vegan for 19 years and have sampled a couple of vegan "donuts" over the years. None were donuts in any way but were more like cake. All of them were prepackaged and were expensive so had pretty much given up on finding a delicious vegan donut.
So...what's the verdict on Whole Foods new vegan donuts? GO NOW!!! GET A DOZEN!!! Whole Foods new vegan donuts are the best baked food i've had in years. Really, they are that good. You can also try the lemon or raspsberry-filled donuts, vegan apple fritters, chocolate/cinnamon or coconut glazed vegan donuts, and vegan apple fritter donut holes. The price is also great. Just .79 cents a donut.
I spoke to Gregg Huff, Whole Foods bakery chef about these donuts because I wanted to give him some positive feedback. He was very eagar to speak to me (and says he's a vegan also). It was a surprising story. He explained that WF was a bit cautious about labeling them as vegan. There was concern that they would not sell. So, Gregg and his crew sold them out in the bakery for a few weeks without labeling them "vegan." They sold well so Gregg recently added the "vegan" name to the item. Results: They sell better. By better, I mean they sell out. I frequently go during the day and find that they are down to just a few donuts.
Gregg says you can call place orders for any of the vegan donuts but give them a 24-hour notice. He added that WF is now selling their fantastic vegan Big John chocolate cookies as a ready-to-cook item. Four cookies sell for $3.99. You can still find Big John cookies in the bakery case.
You can send big thanks to Gregg for coming up with the recipe and selling healthy, delicious vegan donuts by emailing him at gregghuff@wholefoods.com
Gregg: I haven't had a decent vegan donut since I became a vegan 19 years ago. NINETEEN YEARS!!!. Thanks.

I got that too. It seems okay but also somewhat brush-offy.
Here is my response from Dunkin' Donuts on egg-free donuts:
Dear Timothy,
We are currently considering the use of cage-free eggs in our products, exploring quantity of available eggs, feasibility and health issues, among other issues. Dunkin' Brands is committed to actively exploring all animal-friendly alternatives. We have established guidelines that meet or exceed industry standards to ensure the proper treatment of laying hens used for egg production. We purchase eggs from suppliers that support our corporate guidelines related to animal welfare and meet or exceed the United Egg Producers (UEP) guidelines.
Thank you and have a great day.

thanks for posting this, Daniela...I signed ;)
I know that many of us don't go to Dunkin' Donuts because they don't have vegan options. But COK (Compassion Over Killing) has a national campaign to get Dunkin Donuts to get rid of eggs and dairy and provide vegan options. Please go here to sign this petition and leave a comment. Tell em if Whole Foods has vegan donuts, Dunkin' Donuts surely should too!! http://www.dunkincruelty.com/act-now
yeah, the lemon ones are my least favorite.
I tried one of the vegan donuts today at Whole Foods. I've never been a fan of filled donuts and accidently grabbed a Lemon (my least favorite flavor) rather than the Raspberry. Still, this donut was insanely yummy. It was soft and sugary, just as a donut should be. Thank goodness someone finally did it!
This is so exciting. I have been craving donuts for a few weeks now. My coworkers bring in Krispy Kreme at least once week. It looks so good, but I won't eat any and it leaves me craving them.
Yep they are great. VRA announced this several weeks ago and everyone was talking about it constantly. I like them too. I found a recipe for vegan donuts but you have to have a donut holder. I have no idea where to find one. Guess ebay...
WOW!!!! These would be great for the VRA potluck. I wonder if somebody can pick some up???
