General Discussion / PLEASE help!

Thx for sharing this info. I'm not sure what to do in this case, tho, if you've called Houston APCA. Have you tried calling Houston police or sheriff's office? If she's outside the city limits then the sherriff's office is who you should call. Try them then call me and I'll see if there is more I can do. I'm ernest at 512 367(9993). Thx.

General Discussion / PLEASE help!

She is still at it.  Houston now.  Beaconridge Road.  got the same story about the landlord.  Bought 5 dogs from her.  After I got home, bathed the dogs. They were filthy and stunk bad.  The dogs were thin. Their hair started falling out.  I took them to the vet and they have mange.  The one that can be passed on from dog to dog.  They were full of hook worms and very skinny.  They do not know their names (the names she told me) and they are not very sociable.  They are getting better though.  Of course, the ones I actually went to look at were either bred, being bred or the price had doubled.  It was crazy.  She had 4 dogs to a small pen the size of a large kennel carrier.  3 females and 1 male. All breeding.  She has currently over 30 dogs at her house and several more at her grandmothers house.  She told me that she had just had a miscarriage and that was why the dogs looked like they did.  Another lie.  I made 3 complaints with the Houston APCA and nothing has been done.  She lives in the city limits and is way over populated.  She still has bengal cats too.  She went to a kennel close out yesterday and bought more dogs.  Supposedly she has gotten several more and has to have well over 40-50 dogs now.  Someone needs to do something about this woman.  Puppy mill to the extreme.

Events / ANIMAL DEFENDERS INTERNATIONAL - DOCUMENTARY SCREENING

Isn't there a screening of a documentary by Animal Defenders International at Counter Culture on Friday, August 5, 2011?  I see it posted in the Chronicle, but don't see it mentioned on your website.

Events / Vegan Veterinarian Dr. Armaiti May speaking at Aster's Ethiopian

The Vegetarian Network of Austin has a special opportunity that has come up on short notice. Vegan Veterinarian Dr. Armaiti May of California is currently doing a speaking tour around the country, and in two days she'll be coming through Austin on her way from Houston to Dallas. We've made special arrangements to have her come speak this Tuesday evening, March 1st, at 7pm, at Aster's Ethiopian (http://www.astersethiopian.com), a great restaurant that serves lots of vegan options.

She plans to speak on a number of topics depending on the interests of those in attendance, including current issues and campaigns of interest in the animal rights movement, the benefits and risks of vegan diets for dogs and cats, her experiences in vet school regarding animal use in the curriculum, and general activism and vegan outreach to the public. There'll also be a Q and A at the end.

Please take the opportunity to come hear a very active member of the animal rights advocacy community with a unique perspective share her insight. RSVP by sending an email to my (Brendan Good's) address at this link: http://www.vegnetaustin.org/contact.html

You can read about Dr. May in her bio below, or visit her website at http://www.drmayvethousecalls.com:

Armaiti May, DVM has volunteered as an animal rights advocate for the past decade.  A 2005 graduate of UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, Armaiti helped coordinate a surgery training wetlab using ethical-source cadavers from a willed body donation program as an alternative to the school’s terminal surgeries, which were subsequently replaced with humane surgical training.  Before attending veterinary school, as a UC Berkeley student Armaiti successfully campaigned the dorm cafeterias to improve the vegan options and put on several vegan food giveaway events such as MEATOUT.  Armaiti currently organizes a Los Angeles based animal rights meetup group which does regular vegan outreach leafletting.  Dr. May is house call veterinarian for dogs and cats in the Los Angeles area and she plans to have her own vegan-friendly integrative veterinary practice that incorporates animal advocacy into the practice.

Pets in Need / Two kittens and a momma need adoption

Yes, we've gotten the first one adopted, the kitten on the left, and we have someone who's very interested in adopting the other kitten and the mother. We still need to meet with her (and have her meet the cats), but I'm confident this is going to work out well.

Pets in Need / Two kittens and a momma need adoption

Hey everyone! You know what goes with the holidays better than anything? Kittens!

Here's the story: Back in mid-September, we found a litter of newborn baby girl kittens in our backyard. They were just days old—their eyes were closed and they couldn’t even walk yet. We had just taken an older feral cat to the Humane Society to be spayed that week, and figured out she was the mother.

We’ve been raising them in a spare bedroom, but now it’s time to adopt two of them out (we’re keeping one). We need to find good homes for two kittens and also their mother, who is no longer feral and very happy being a housecat.

There's a gray tabby with white paws and underbelly who is very affectionate. She’s always the first one to greet us when we enter the room. Her sister, also a gray and white tabby with a little bit of orange, is more of a lap kitty. They are both very adorable and we will miss them very much! (We already have two cats or we would keep them all!)

Strong candidates for re-homing would be people who would spay them, keep them as indoor-only cats, and who would not declaw them. Even better would be if you wanted to take both kittens so we could keep the sisters together!

If you want to adopt, please give us a call, we want to hear from you right away. My number is three seven seven, nine eight nine three. If you can help in some other way (like you know someone who might want them, or want to help spread the word), feel free to just post back here.
