EVENTS FOR THIS WEEK
Posted on Sun Oct 12 15:04:20 -0500 2008
1) National Primate Liberation Week is this week. This event calls attention to the use of primates for experiments across the U.S. Almost 96,000 chimps live in labs across the country. The National Institute of Health currently funds over $1 billion in primate experiments. Most are used to find cures for human diseases (such as alcohol or cocaine addiction) or for behavioral studies. Many of these experiments are redundant or duplicate other experiments. Life in labs is stressful to chimps leading to depression, self-mutilation, constant pacing or other pathological behaviors.
Join AFA and Students Against Cruelty to Animals this Tuesday, October 14th from 12:30 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Seay Building on the UT Campus (northwest corner of Speedway/West Dean Keaton). We have signs and banners but you are welcome to bring a friend. For more information about his event go to http://www.all-creatures.org/saen/articles-rep-prim2004.html
2) Former Animal Liberation Front member Peter Young is speaking at the UT campus this Wednesday. Peter is an animal rights activist who in 1997 released 8,000 mink from six fur farms across the midwest. In 1998, a federal grand jury indicted him on four charges of "Extortion by Interfering with Interstate Commerce", and two charges of "Animal Enterprise Terrorism". He was released from prison in Feb 2007, Before being sentenced, he told the court, addressing fur farmers, that he would "forever mark those nights on your property as the most rewarding experience of my life." Go to www.supportpeter.com for more information.
He will be speaking at UT on Oct 15 at 7pm.It's in the Art building on 23rd and San Jacinto. Room: ART 1.102

5) According to an international group scientists and experts, one in four mammals now face extinction due to habitat loss, hunting, and global warming. As human populations increase the problem of habitat loss will only increase. As for hunting and global warming, as animal rights activists we can and should always speak out against hunting. This is nothing more than a blood sport that targets defenseless animals. Always remind folks that our meat eating diet is the single biggest contributor to global warming, even more than driving a gas powered vehicle. The UN report on global warming stating in 2007 that going vegetarian or vegan reduced your carbon gas emissions more than driving a hybrid car.

SUPPORT OUR SUPPORTERS

As you remember, last Thusday was Great American Meatout across the U.S. and the world. Groups involved in this event worked to educate the public about how eating meat contributes to global warming, increases our risk for heart attacks, cancer, stroke, obesity, diabetes, allergies, and other illnesses, pollutes our water, and contributes to animal abuse.
Action for Animals worked to raise awareness among our city council and mayor about the link between global warming and meat consumption by delivering free vegan and vegetarian food to city hall. We included a fact sheet plus an essay written by one of our members on the subject (http://vvviking.blogspot.com/2006/06/saving-planet-one-meal-at-time.html).
Many thanks to these restaurants for donating free food for this event. Mother's Cafe, Casa de Luz, Dhaba Joy, El Greco, and Wheatsville Coop. Next time you are in these businesses please thank the managers for their contribution.
