Comments - Brainwashing

I protested the circus for the first time last year, and I got a fair number of SUV drivers violently shaking their fists and their middle fingers at me. I agree that for some it is inner conflict. When actually outside the circus, it may be that they are mad about us upsetting their kids.

I hear that kind of reaction all the time.  What is most surprising to me is just how violently people tend to react when I talk about the treatment of animals in circuses, on factory farms, in labs, etc.  Some of it is understandable.  After all, nobody likes to be told something they are doing might not be such a good thing.  But if they are so sure that I am crazy and they are right, then why get so angry?  I have come to believe that a great deal of it comes from inner conflict -- deep down they know there is truth to what we are saying and they are fighting hard not to acknowledge it.

So, I say just keep sharing what you know.  Give people a chance to come to their own conclusions.  Your commenter see this as brainwashing today.  Maybe at some point he'll be exposed to the facts from enough places that he'll change his mind.
