PETA - love them or hate them?

Today I participated in a PETA demonstration called 'Meat is Murder' at Sixth and Congress from noon to 1pm.  The setup was one I have heard about PETA doing in other cities.  Two very skantily clad women (wearing only nude colored underwear) covered in red paint, laying in meat trays and wrapped in plastic wrap.  The scene is meant to represent that flesh is the same whether it is human or animal and it is...

Animal Rights Conference 2010

Next month I am attending the Animal Rights conference in Washington DC.  I have been wanting to check out this event for a few years and finally decided to go for it!  The conference prides itself on presenting all different points of view (welfare, abolition and all points in between) with the end goal of animal liberation.  I am curious to meet people and hear speakers that are working towards the goals we share. Some...

SXSW Vegan Bake Sale

On Friday March 19th Action for Animals is partnering with Lazy Smurf and VegAustin to hold a vegan bake sale at Club Deville during the Brooklyn Vegan SXSW day party (see the listing in the Events section).  Bake sales are a great way to reach out to the community.  We can show people that vegan baked goods are delicious and cruelty free.  The money raised from the bake sale will be given to Food for...

More Vegan Options at Chipotle!

As vegans we know Chipotle is pretty great as far as fast food restaurants go. Black beans, rice, salsa, guacamole and lettuce make a tasty, quick and nutritious snack on the go.  But Chipotle is adding something new!  They call it Garden Blend - it looks like soy chicken - marinated in chipotle adobo and then grilled.  And it is the same price as the beans and rice burrito! See photos and description here: New...

Mink Fur at TJ Maxx

I was at the TJ Maxx today in the Sunset Valley shopping center looking at purses.  I found a cute, emerald green, pleather purse on sale and was ready to buy it.  Then I noticed the display of fur covered purses.  I tried to ignore them but my inner activist got the best of me and I had to go look at them.  The label said they were made of mink from Greece and the...

Yacht Club Social 2009 Wrap-Up

Our First Annual Yacht Club Social was a big success!  Thanks to Constance and Jim for hosting this great event. Thanks to everyone who came out.  We had lots of delicious vegan food potluck style.  Ernest brought vegan donuts from Whole Foods that were a big hit.  Due to the heat and low lake level we didn't do much yachting.  We will work on that for next year.  We did play a rousing game of...

The Joy of Vegan Baking

I love reading vegan cookbooks.  But that is the problem - I just read them, I don't actually make anything from them.   All of this changed though when I got The Joy of Vegan Baking by Colleen Patrick-Goudreau.  I knew who Colleen was from her great Vegetarian Food for Thought podcasts and website Compassionate Cooks.  This book also won the VegNews Cookbook of the Year award so I was anxious to check it out. ...

Vegan Treats Website/Contest

I love a good contest - I once won $2,000 from Frito Lay.  It was actually a trip to Wisconsin but I took the cash instead of the trip!  Can you blame me? :) Right now VegNews magazine has a contest to win a Vegan Treats sampler box.  All you have to do is go to this website and tell them your favorite cookie flavor.  What could be easier?   If anyone wins you have to...

Kucinich will support and speak on VEGAN EARTH DAY!

I just received this message on Myspace: "Representative Dennis Kucinich of Ohio expressed his support this week for the June 21st commemoration of VEGAN EARTH DAY. Kucinich Press Secretary Nathan White told Bob Linden of radio program "Go Vegan with Bob Linden" that House member Kucinich is crafting a proclamation in support of VEGAN EARTH DAY and its goal of increased global awareness of environmental, health, economic, and other benefits of adopting the vegan lifestyle....
