The Joy of Vegan Baking

Buy our cookbooksI love reading vegan cookbooks.  But that is the problem - I just read them, I don't actually make anything from them.   All of this changed though when I got The Joy of Vegan Baking by Colleen Patrick-Goudreau.

I knew who Colleen was from her great Vegetarian Food for Thought podcasts and website Compassionate Cooks.  This book also won the VegNews Cookbook of the Year award so I was anxious to check it out.

The book is as amazing as I had hoped and inspired me to start baking right away.  The recipes are simple and use uncomplicated ingredients.  They are the desserts you grew up on like Date Bars, Cinnamon Coffee Cake and Blueberry Cobbler.  I have made the Lemon Bars and Raspberry Oatmeal Bars and both were every bit as good as the ones my Mom made when I was a kid.

Next on my list to try are Oatmeal Raisin Cookies, Carmel Popcorn and Zucchini Bread.

How about you?  Has anybody else tried any of the recipes from this book?  Let me know how they turned out!

Since I posted this I have made the Blueberry Cobbler and the Banana Choclate Chip Muffins and both turned out perfectly.  I just love the simplicity of the recipes and how the remind me of desserts I grew up eating.

I checked out that link Carrie - the author is adorable! :)  What is the best recipe you have made from that book?  I might need it too!

I have this cookbook sitting right next to me, and I do love it! Every Thanksgiving I make a different vegan pumpkin pie recipe, and this past year I finally found one worth repeating from The Joy of Vegan Baking! No crack on the top of the pie! The recipes I've made and loved are Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Frosting, Blueberry Cake, Vanilla Cupcakes with Chocolate Peanut Butter Frosting, Strawbeery Cupcakes with Buttercream Frosting, and Cinnamon Coffe Cake. I made the Irish Soda Bread recipe, but that didn't come out as well. I love this cookbook, but I was little perplexed by the "Sorbets, Shakes, and Smoothies" section. I'd rather have more bar, cookie, and cake recipes over cold beveridges. I still have a lot more to get through in this book. I also have My Sweet Vegan by Hannah Kaminsky. I favor My Sweet Vegan for the number of drool inducing pictures, and the unique range of recipes, but The Joy of Vegan Baking is more user friendly. It's a draw for me. Here's a link to Kaminsky's book.

oh girl, you have found the greatest, easiest vegan baking book ever. I love it! We bought our copy a few months ago, and I use it weekly. The zucchini bread is a definite yes! Love it, everyone I give it to loves it, people at work even buy it from my by the loaf (and yes, I make theirs vegan too lol). Great stuff.

The lemon cheesecake is pretty good too. I have a hard time making it, but its technique, not the recipe. The bread recipes are pretty good too- we've made the Naan, sandwich bread and focaccia from it. All are great.

I can't say enough how much I love this one. The intros that break down the best uses of different replacers are wonderful.
