Thanks to Austin Pets Alive! and Sue at Counter Culture for bringing this good news to our attention--The Austin City Coucil passed a unanimous resolution last Thursday with recommendations for a plan to achieve a 90% save rate at Town Lake Animal Shelter within 18 months by changing some existing policies and implementing new programs.
Some of the recommedations include:
- Off-site adoption throughout the City and County staffed 7 days a week in high traffic areas.
- Partnerships with EmanciPet to help increase the capacity of the shelter to make more impounded animals ready for adoption.
- Employing training techniques to help resolve treatable behaviorial issues in adoptable cats and dogs.
- End the killing of any healthy or non-aggressive dog while kennels or cages are unused.
- Developing a plan to maximize the utility and usage of the Davenport Building and existing shelter structures in compliance with the Council’s October 2007 directive
- Implementing a public-awareness campaign to educate the public about the adoptable and lovable nature of shelter animals.
This is certainly great news for Austin's homeless dogs and cats. I don't think this resolution came easily; it took a lot of hours and input from community leaders/animal rescuers and advocates who understand that it's not acceptable to euthanize 10,000 dogs and cats a year at TLAC. I wish this plan success.

Also, I filmed that pink chihuahua that they show in that clip. It's really sad. Someone dyed her pink and then surrendered her to the shelter and she's under 1 year old.
I'm making a documentary about this and Austin Pets Alive. Screening is in mid December!
